Dr. April Bauer grew up on her parents’ farm in Chillicothe, Ohio, where the barn cats and family dogs had several litters over the years. She and her brother cared for them constantly, and it wasn’t difficult for Dr. Bauer to develop a passion for pets early on in life. As she got a bit older and started caring for animals in the 4-H program, her interest only deepened. For her, veterinary medicine was the obvious career choice!
Dr. Bauer attended Miami University to major in zoology, spending her summers off working as a Veterinary Assistant, before earning her veterinary degree at Ohio State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. She secured her first position as a licensed veterinarian at a busy five-doctor urban practice in Chicago, where she also spent a few days per month working at the local no-kill shelter.
After moving to the Columbus area with her husband to be closer to family, Dr. Bauer was thrilled to join the North Kenny Veterinary Hospital team in July of 2013. Medically, she’s fond of soft-tissue surgery, dental work, and feline medicine. Dr. Bauer is also passionate about spay-and-neuter advocacy, and still gives her time to nearby spay-and-neuter clinics and frequently brings in feral cats around her home for trap-neuter-release work.
In her time away from the hospital, Dr. Bauer can be found reading, cooking, and exploring Columbus with her family. She and her husband have a young son, Thomas (Dr. Bauer spayed an 80-pound dog here at the hospital the morning that she went into labor!), and also share their home with two loveable cats named Patty Cake and Wally.
